Earlier this month, The Kents released their sophomore EP, “Within Waves,” another all too brief 5-song album. Says lead singer Warren Frank of the new release, “it’s like those classic coming-of-age Breakfast Club-type films.” Awkwardly dissolving romances, the impact of family, and tests of personal faith are just some of the topics tackled on the Within Waves’ five songs.
Formed in Lindsay and comprised of Tanner Paré (drums), Freddy Kwon (guitar), Warren Frank (vocals) and Luke Shauf (bass), The Kents return with their characteristic indie sound with that west coast vibe and drip guitar. The drums are a little heavier, leaning the sound more toward alternative, easily slipping them into a playlist alongside early Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Kooks, and Arcade Fire.
The lyrics hit tougher subjects this time around:
“Feel what you’ve been feeling from the start”
“all the ways I need you”
“is there anyone?”
“answers won’t come easy”
“there’s nothing left to say”
“as I drive home empty handed”
“would it even matter at all?”
“Within Waves” is moody, thoughtful, mature, and highly repeatable. My favourite track is “Is there anyone?” where Frank’s vocals really shine. It's well worth the $5 to support these local gents.
In 2016, The Kents independently released their debut WAKING EP, which encapsulates lyrical explorations of family, loss and separation from the comfort of adolescence with a hook-hungry, pop filter that controls the chaos. They have been featured on the Apple Music’s 2016 Rising Stars, Spotify’s Best of 2016 Viral Hits, Hockey Night in Canada, Canada’s Walk Of Fame Emerging Artist and earned radio support from CBC including George Stroumboulopoulos and various other regional and national platforms. They’ve shared the stage for sold-out shows with The Sheepdogs, he Trews, The Strumbellas, The Elwins, The Fast Romantics and Hollerado. With new music to unveil to the world, the band hits the road with a renewed sense of purpose. Within Waves was released on October 13, 2017.
