In 1962, the Academy Theatre was slated for demolition. Thanks to a visionary committed group of Lindsay citizens, the Academy Theatre Foundation was incorporated to purchase the building, and restore it to a live theatre venue as it had been when it opened in 1893. Now in 2018 as a publicly owned non-profit organization, we will be celebrating the 125th anniversary of the Theatre.
As part of these celebrations, we will be replacing the seating on the main floor with larger, more comfortable seats. Included will be new carpeting and floor level lighting. Some seats will be removable to accommodate wheelchairs. Due to the configuration of the balcony, the original seats will remain. Also, a new main floor accessible washroom will be constructed.
The total cost for these renovations is $340,000. Federal grants for $160,000. have been approved and/or received. Therefore, we need to raise $180,000. for these projects. However, we have set our goal at $230,000. to include elimination of the last of our debt to Kawartha Lakes Community Futures Development Corporation. We expect to meet our fundraising goal by January 31, 2018.
In recognition of every $500. donation, you will have the option to have your support recognized by a small plaque installed on a seat back with your name engraved. What a seat sale! Charitable donation receipts will, of course, be issued.
Please join us in taking your seat(s) at the Academy Theatre.
